A successful but unhappy Japanese accountant, Shohei Sugiyama, feels unfulfilled despite having a loving wife and daughter. One evening, he becomes captivated by a beautiful woman, Mai Kishikawa, he sees in the window of a ballroom dance studio. On a whim, he decides to secretly sign up for dance lessons, hoping to meet her and inject some passion into his mundane life. He soon discovers the joy and camaraderie of ballroom dancing, which brings unexpected changes to his life and relationships.
This charming comedy uses dance as a metaphor for individual expression, risk-taking and intellectual flight.

Shohei's search for inner peace is a roller-coaster ride -- and modest, fancy-effects-free quest that finds you laughing out loud one minute and shedding silent tears the next.
